Equipment you’ll need
To set up a new SAN using the instructions in this chapter, you need:
Fibre Channel RAID storage devices for SAN storage Â
Two computers that have Mac OS X Lion Server to act as SAN metadata controllers Â
One or more SAN client computers that have Mac OS X Lion or Lion Server Â
An Intel processor and at least 2 GB of RAM in each SAN computer Â
An additional 2 GB of RAM per SAN volume in each metadata controller Â
Two Ethernet ports for each SAN computer Â
An Apple Fibre Channel card or other Fibre Channel adapter for each SAN computer Â
A Fibre Channel switch and cables for all storage devices and computers Â
An Ethernet switch and cables for the private SAN metadata network Â
A second Ethernet switch and cables for public intranet and Internet access Â
An equipment rack if your RAID storage systems, SAN computers, or switches are Â
designed to mount in one
A list of qualied RAID systems and Fibre Channel switches is available on the Xsan
website at www.apple.com/xsan/.
What you need to know
You need to provide the following information when you set up your SAN:
A static (xed) public IP address, subnet mask, router address, and DNS server Â
address for each computer on the SAN. You can enter this information manually or
congure a DHCP server to provide it. If you want the DHCP server to provide IP
addresses, be sure it always assigns the same IP address to each SAN computer.
A single user name and password for the administrator account on all SAN computers. Â
A user name and password for each user who will log in to a client computer. Â
A unique name for each computer (recommended) Â
