AirPort Extreme Network Designs 19
Naming the AirPort Network
Give your AirPort network a name. This name appears in the AirPort status menu on the
AirPort-equipped computers that are in range of your AirPort network.
Creating a Network Password
To protect your network, click the “Enable encryption (using WEP)” checkbox to require users
to enter a password to join your network. To change the password, click “Change password.”
Using 128-Bit Encryption
Your AirPort Extreme Base Station supports 128-bit encryption, a higher standard of
protection for networks. When you enable encryption using WEP and click “Change
password” in the AirPort Network portion of the AirPort pane, you can choose between
standard 40-bit encryption (which gives maximum compatibility) or 128-bit encryption
(which provides maximum security) from the “WEP key length” pop-up menu.
If you choose 128-bit encryption, only computers with 128-bit encryption-capable wireless
networking cards will be able to join your network. If you choose 40-bit encryption,
computers with 40-bit and 128-bit encryption-capable wireless networking cards will be able
to join your wireless network, but they will join with only 40-bit encryption.
