Chapter 2
Step 2: Configure IP on your computer
Configuring IP consists of two steps:
m
Selecting a networking interface
m
Selecting a configuration method
To configure IP:
1
Open the Network pane of System Preferences, and then choose Ethernet from the Show
pop-up menu if you are connecting to an Ethernet network, or AirPort if you are connecting
to an AirPort network.
2
Click the TCP/IP tab, and then choose the configuration method from the Configure pop-up
menu.
The three most frequently used methods are PPP, DHCP, and Manually.
m
DHCP is used frequently on Ethernet networks and by DSL or cable modem providers.
m
PPP is used for dialup connections to the Internet.
m
Manual configurations are used on Ethernet networks and sometimes by DSL and cable
modem providers. Your network administrator or ISP should provide you with the
appropriate configuration information.
For example, below is the Network pane of System Preferences, configured to use AirPort for
the network interface and DHCP for the TCP/IP configuration.
