Step 2: Configure IP on your computer

Conﬁguring IP consists of two steps:

Selecting a networking interface

Selecting a conﬁguration method

To conﬁgure IP:

Open the Network pane of System Preferences, and then choose Ethernet from the Show

pop-up menu if you are connecting to an Ethernet network, or AirPort if you are connecting

to an AirPort network.

Click the TCP/IP tab, and then choose the conﬁguration method from the Conﬁgure pop-up

menu.

The three most frequently used methods are PPP, DHCP, and Manually.

DHCP is used frequently on Ethernet networks and by DSL or cable modem providers.

PPP is used for dialup connections to the Internet.

Manual conﬁgurations are used on Ethernet networks and sometimes by DSL and cable

modem providers. Your network administrator or ISP should provide you with the

appropriate conﬁguration information.

For example, below is the Network pane of System Preferences, conﬁgured to use AirPort for

the network interface and DHCP for the TCP/IP conﬁguration.
